Data Sovereignty is First Nations having the right to own, control, access, and steward data (past, present and future) about their communities, lands, and culture to live Mino Pimatisiwin.
FNHSSM's Data Sovereignty Team will capture, protect, and share our stories, in accordance with our own worldviews and self-determining Nations by Our people, Our Knowledge Keepers, Our storytellers, and Our interpreters.
Our goal of data sovereignty will be realized as our team helps guide communities so that:
-
Every First Nation in Manitoba owns, uses and stores their own data that they would share with the region,
-
Every First Nation have an ethical review body for research that includes community members,
-
First Nations apply and lead their own research, and
-
First Nations use their data to make decisions and share information with their community.
We are mandated by the Chiefs in Assembly to advance First Nation Data Sovereignty in this region.
