Honouring Indigenous Nurses and Their Dedication to First Nations Health
Winnipeg, MB - Today, the First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba (FNHSSM) proudly recognizes May 14th as Indigenous Nurses Day in Manitoba, as led by Manitoba Indigenous Nurses Inc.. This day is a celebration of the exceptional contributions Indigenous nurses make to the health and well-being of First Nations people and all Manitobans.
FNHSSM extends its deepest gratitude and respect to every Indigenous Nurse for their unwavering commitment to culturally grounded care, leadership, and advocacy in communities across the province. We also thank all nurses whose compassion and dedication continue to shape a stronger, healthier future for First Nations and beyond.
"Indigenous nurses are not only caregivers - they are leaders, healers, and protectors of our communities' well-being," said Chief Sheldon Kent, FNHSSM Chair and Chief of Black River First Nation. "Their knowledge and compassion are woven into the health journeys of so many of our people."
Vice-Chair Chief Derek Nepinak of Minegoziibe Anishinabe (Pine Creek First Nation) added, "On this Indigenous Nurses Day, we honour our nurses for the sacred roles they play in restoring balance, wellness, and hope in our Nations. Their work is a powerful expression of our values and sovereignty in health."
